We are a Google Workspace customer and have contacted customer support. We have exactly the same problem as all of you here. I hope Google issues an update soon because it really makes my life uncomfortable :D Sometimes it throws and error right after turning on indexing and it becomes disabled immediately. I can turn it on with mdutil -i on /Volumes/GoogleDrive but my experience is that in best case scenario it only works for a day or two. I started to dig deeper and mdutil -s /Volumes/GoogleDrive tells me that indexing is indeed disabled. Freshly installed Google Drive for Desktop v47 does not work :( So I went that way and reinstalled the M1 Mac Mini. I thought maybe I need to reinstall my M1 Mac Mini because the beta or the update broke a pipe or cut a string behind the curtain. I had to reinstall that MBP and with the freshly installed Google Drive for Desktop client lets the system index files. What I also find interesting is that on my Intel based MBP v47 works just fine. Finding files via Spotlight became such a muscle memory to me that the broken Google Drive indexing feels like one of my arms are cut off.
